An Unexpected Event

There is nothing like sitting in the living room, relaxing on a Friday afternoon after a long week and getting prepared for a busy weekend when you all of the sudden hear one of your children come barging through the garage door crying and screaming, "Nooooo, noooooooo, noooooo!" I recognized the shrill as Camden's voice and honestly thought he had broke a bone, or had watched Casen get ran over outside while they were playing with their friends. I jumped up out of my chair to see him holding his bloody hand over his mouth. When I asked him to let me look, it was obvious his lip was injured as was his left front tooth. He no longer had two pearly whites in the front, but instead had about one and two-thirds of his two front teeth left. After getting him to calm down just enough to tell us what happened, it was clear he had some sort of run in with his scooter handle, which was evident by a tooth mark left in the metal handle.

As I was consoling him and trying to figure out the extent of the injury, I had our dentist, Dr. Wainwright, on the phone explaining the situation. After I sent him pictures of Camden's poor mouth, he felt that the nerve possibly was not involved and felt Camden needed to let his lip heel a little over the weekend before he worked on his tooth. We would keep our fingers crossed that a root canal was not needed. I was instructed to have Camden rinse his mouth out with warm salt water, give him Tylenol, ice his lip, and then call and make an appointment first thing Monday morning for Dr. Wainwright to assess the damage. He did tell us that if the pain was unbearable to let him know and he would see him prior to Monday. So we did just what the doctor ordered.

Camden and I then went upstairs and sat together just letting him calm down, hold ice on his lip and relax all while watching some Henry Danger on TV. After he calmed down enough I asked him about the whole incident. He still was not exactly sure what happened, but thinks his scooter either hit a rock or a dent in the road and his handle bars just came up while his face was coming down and busted out his tooth. He said he never fell off the scooter, he just felt the pain.

After a few hours of us relaxing, Shane went and picked up McDonald's for us to eat. As we were eating, Shane asked Camden why he was yelling, "Noooo, noooooo, nooooo," as he was coming into the house. Camden's response was "Because I thought I was going to end up with a silver tooth!" Shane and I died laughing. Poor thing - if he heard it once, he heard it million times from me when he was younger that if he didn't take care of his teeth, he would end up with silver teeth and nobody likes silver teeth! You know, as a mom, you will say what you need to to get your kids to do what they need to do - like brush their teeth!!!! Isn't it funny that aside from the pain of his lip, that is what had him terrified the most???? He now knows that his dad busted out his two front teeth at about the same age and ended up with two pretty pearly whites and in no way would he have to have a silver tooth.

Despite his busted lip and broken tooth (which was just a little sensitive) Camden played in two soccer games over the weekend and did great.

We also cheered on Casen while he played baseball.

This is how his lip looked Saturday night.

He was a bit embarrassed by his chipped tooth and I offered to let him stay home Monday until his dentist appointment but he did not want to miss any school. Camden instructed me to schedule his dentist appointment during PE (at 9:00am) if able so he would not miss any academics. This instruction came only after Shane had checked with the PE coaches regarding mileage club, which Camden is in first place in the 4th grade and was not about to lose his position for a dentist appointment. Due to the weather and the fact that they are currently doing the Fitnessgram, they would not be running for mileage club, so that would be the perfect time. Unfortunately, that is not when they requested us to come in. Instead his appointment was at 10:00, which still upset him because that was when they took attendance and now his perfect attendance would be ruined. Ugh!!! Oh well, he was willing to give that up to have his tooth fixed. :)

After multiple x-rays and some questioning, it was determined that all he would need is a filling at this point, but later on down the road to be prepared for a crown or veneer. Dr. Wainwright was so great with Camden and did everything he could to protect Camden's poor lip that is still bruised with  two ulcers on the inside of his upper lip. He got Camden all fixed up, and has him looking like his old self, despite a little lip swelling!

We are now wondering when he will get back on the scooter . . .
