Fun in Frisco

Camden's soccer team was scheduled to play in Frisco this weekend. We had been looking forward to going because we had plans to see Mason and Grace. As of Thursday night at soccer practice, Camden was still not certain if he felt comfortable enough to play. On Friday, he finally decided he felt he could play so he and I headed to Frisco Friday night. We woke up Saturday morning and headed to the soccer fields. It was an overcast and extremely windy day.  Mason and Grace came and watched him play. I found myself holding my breath a few times while he was playing for fear he would further injure his arm. At one point, another player tripped him and he went falling to the ground, but fortunately he slid head first instead of falling directly on his arm.

The soccer field we played at was literally one mile from the Dude Perfect warehouse. We have watched more Dude Perfect videos than I care to admit and seen them live, so it was only fitting that we took a picture in front of their warehouse.

We spent the rest of the afternoon with Mason and Grace. Grace is currently a graduate student at Texas A&M Commerce where she is working on pursuing a career as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology (LSSP). While Mason and I hung out, Camden was able to help her out with one of her classes by taking a lengthy IQ test. Afterwards we went out to dinner with them and then headed to our hotel. Camden hung out with his friends at the hotel, while I relaxed in the room.

We got up the next morning and headed to a different soccer field. The sun was out and it was not as windy, so was a bit more enjoyable to watch. Afterwards we headed home. While we were in Frisco, Shane and Casen headed to Franklin Saturday for a baseball tournament. Since their games were late Saturday evening and then early Sunday morning, they spent the night in College Station. Surprisingly, Camden and I made it home before they did.

Today was the solar eclipse. If the weather was good, we were supposed to get a very good view of it. Unfortunately, it was rainy and overcast through most of the eclipse. We did go outside to see if we could see anything exciting, but it wasn't until later when we were back in our office that we got a glimpse of it out of our window.

Mom sent this picture from
Kerrville

It is a shame we didn't get an amazing look at the solar eclipse. But Lord willing, maybe we will get a good view of the next solar eclipse in August 2044.

An Exciting Easter Weekend

Do you ever just look at your kiddos and see glimpses of them as adults? Saturday morning, after Casen asked for some chocolate coffee, I looked over and for a brief moment he looked all grown up.

Yesterday was Easter and of course that meant that the boys woke up to candy filled Easter baskets. We then headed to church to celebrate the risen Lord. And, for the first time ever, we did not do an Easter egg hunt. . . guess that is just a sign of the times.

On Friday, Camden and several of his team mates played in a 5v5 Challenge soccer tournament. His team made it to the finals, however Camden didn't make it to the final game. During the second game, which was against the 10U girls, it was his turn to play goalie. He was doing a great job defending the goal, however I didn't even get a chance to get a picture of him playing what he considers the most dreaded position. As I was getting my phone ready to take a pic, one of the girls kicked the ball with all her might from about 10 feet in front of him and as he tried to defend it, the ball bent his hand back. I saw him grab his wrist area, and next thing I knew he was taking himself out of the game. As he and I headed over to the trainer that was on site so he could get checked out, he was absolutely ticked. The trainer palpated his wrist/arm and made him do different range of motion exercises. She felt like he had just sprained his arm, so she put ice on it and told him to sit out of the game that was going on, but if he felt up to it, he could play in the next game. She told us that if by Monday the pain had not improved, he should follow up with an orthopedist.

When the third game started, Camden opted to not start the game, but did attempt to play several times. It was obvious he was in pain and after several plays, he would remove himself from the game. His team won the third game, which sent them to the finals, but we decided to head on home since Camden decided he wasn't going to play in the final game. I dose him up with Naproxen and he headed over to his friend Trennan's house to spend the night. Despite his arm hurting, he played pickle ball with Trennan that night. By Sunday evening, his arm was still not feeling great and he was having a hard time supinating and pronating his arm and had increased pain if he tried to push anything. I debated taking him to an urgent care yesterday to get an x-ray, but decided that even if it was fractured, we would still have to follow up with an orthopedist, so decided to wait until today to make an appointment.

I was able to get him in this afternoon with Dr. Mills at Cypress Orthopedics. They took an x-ray of his arm and then put us in a room to see the physician. Prior to the x-ray technician leaving the room, she pulled up the x-rays on the computer and walked out. The second I saw them pulled up on the screen, I just started laughing. No April Fools joke here - I could easily see the break.

I always knew I was going to be THAT mom whose child had a fractured arm and I would be in no rush to take him to the doctor. Heck I hardly let the kids use bandaids when they were little. When I was a school nurse, parents always felt like they had to explain themselves to me if their child had ended up with a fracture and they had waited a few days to take them to the doctor. I always told them I had zero judgement because we don't have x-ray vision and honestly, I could see myself doing the same thing. And, here I was.

When Dr. Mills came in, he confirmed what I saw - a buckle fracture of the left distal radius. Luckily, his fracture was not at the growth plate. He offered Camden a hard cast if he wanted a lot of sympathy or told him he could wear a brace. Camden had zero desire for a cast, so opted for the brace. When asked if Camden could still play soccer,  Dr. Mills said if he felt up to it, he could. He feels like it should heal in three to four weeks, but wants us to follow up in three weeks for another x-ray. Camden told me he knew it was probably fractured and was so proud that he had never cried despite the pain. Luckily, he doesn't think I am a bad mom for making him wait until today to be seen. :)
