Submerged

Camden is finally old enough to go to vacation bible school - and that makes both he and me happy!!!! The theme for VBS at our church this year was Submerged.

I decided to volunteer and was assigned the task of being one of the leaders of a group of Kindergarteners (going into first grade). It was a good group of kiddos and we had a good time. Camden invited his best friend from school, Casen, to go with him.

We had a great week being 'submerged' in God's word. There were lots of fun songs to sing, crafts, learning about missions and so much more.

While Camden and I were at VBS, Shane and Casen had their own VBS at home singing worship songs and learning a lesson that coincided with what we learned at church. What a fun week for everyone!

Casen's Four Year Check-up

Today I took Casen to see Dr. Worrall for his four year check-up. Prior to them calling him back and weighing him, he and I were guessing on what his weight would be and we both were guessing in the 30's. As I was answering the nurse's questions regarding him, another nurse took him to check his height, weight, vision and hearing. When he came back to the room, I asked him how much he weighed and he proudly told me 45 pounds. I guess we both are not good guessers!

He is progressing just as he should be, if not a little better in the height and weight department. Like I said he weighed 45 pounds which is the 95th% and he was 44 inches in height, which shows to be 99th%, however when the doctor showed me his progression on the chart, he was beyond that. He has really grown over the past year - and believe me, his eating patterns definitely show that! He passed his vision with 20/25 and passed his hearing test. The nurse gave me an asthma questionnaire to answer since the doctor diagnosed him with asthma last year, however he has had no problems what so ever this year with asthma symptoms. Woo Hoo!! I was hoping he would grow out of it. We have been using his Qvar inhaler prophylactically since May and usually use it throught the summer since that has been his 'bad' time, however the doctor said after we stop it this time, do not use it again next year and see how he does. Let's hope after this summer we are done with it!

Several days ago, Casen asked me if he was getting shots at this appointment, and as reluctant as I was to tell him the truth because I did not want him worrying about it, I informed him he was. He acted all excited - apparently he did not remember what it felt like. So I reminded him on the way to the doctor that he was getting some shots and it may hurt a little, but reassured him it would all be ok. He was fine with it and was not the least bit concerned. When the nurse arrived in the room with his shots and I told him he was getting three, he still did not seemed the least bit concerned. Instead he pulled his shorts right up for the nurse and was ready to go. The nurse had him lie down and had me hold his hands, which he couldn't understand why all that had to be done, but he did it anyway. She told him to take deep breaths before each shot, which he gladly did and never once flinched nor cried. He was the perfect patient! He made my job and the nurses so easy! I was super proud of him!!!!

Of course, I asked Casen the same questions I asked him last year to see how things have changed, and here are the results:

Father's Day 2016

Today is Father's Day and honestly I think the day ended up being more about the boys than it did their daddy. We went to Sugarland to Shane's sisters church and celebrated with his parents who were there as well as his sister's family. They had bounce houses, pizza and sno-cones to enjoy after church. We then went back to Shanelle's house and let the boys hang out and play before heading home. The kids had a great time.

Poppa Ron opening his gift
Camden made Shane something for Father's Day, which Shane proudly hung in the kitchen.

The boys loved giving their daddy his card, minus a gift. Bless Shane's heart, we gave him the choice between two things to pick for his Father's Day gift and will order whichever one he decides on. He is not the easiest person to buy for since he is rather picky (which this is nothing I would not say to his face) so it is easier to let him choose. Hopefully, despite him not receiving an actual gift today, he knows we love him!

Casen Starts T-ball

Today was Casen's first T-ball game and he could not have been any more excited. Since he has been practicing all Spring with Camden, he was glad to finally have his turn at it. We signed him up for I-9 since practice and games are all on Saturday and since we had a good experience with Camden when he played with them. Shane signed up to be the assistant coach, however when the other coach arrived to practice (20 minutes late) and said he was a basketball player and never played baseball, he pretty much is leaving everything up to Shane.

Casen played a great game and volunteered to be the first to play first base (which is basically the only position they have aside from all the others standing in the field waiting for the ball to come to them). He did great hustling, tagging people out (even though there are not outs in I-9) and hitting the ball. You could definitely tell that he has an older brother who played because he was one of only a few who knew to run to first base after he hit the ball.

We have the tradition of the boys being able to pick a restaurant that they want to eat at for their birthdays. Since we were on the road for his birthday, we decided we would go out to eat for Casen's birthday dinner tonight. He picked Texas Roadhouse so he could eat the peanuts and throw the shells on the floor. Also, I don't think he wanted to wear the sombrero and get whipped creme on his face at our Mexican restaurant. He did not ride the saddle, however they did bring him ice cream, which he shared with Camden.

The Parasitic Nightmare

I will start by saying that I honestly debated whether I was going to blog about this or not, however since this was a part of our lives (and as you will read, a rather taxing part of my life) I decided I needed to do it. It all started the morning of Casen's birthday party. It was about 9:15am and I was in the bathroom flat ironing my hair. Casen came in the bathroom all excited because he had gotten himself all ready to go to the party. As is the case every morning, his hair was a hot mess, so I told him I needed to fix his hair. I got it a little wet and started combing it, when I noticed something in his hair. After further examination, I realized he had lice. WHAT???? I figured since I had boys, our chances of ever having lice were slim to none. WRONG!!! And honestly, I should know better being a school nurse and having seen it in boys numerous times. Anyway, I called my mom in the bathroom and told her that after I got ready we needed to run to the store and get some some Nix and treat him before we went to the party. We checked Camden before leaving and he was in the clear - whew! Now mind you, we needed to leave the house at 10:30 to be at the party place in time to set up before the guests arrived. So I finished getting ready, mom and I ran to H-E-B, picked up the Nix and headed back home. I got Casen to come to the tub, which of course he was all confused because he was dressed and ready to go, so I told him we were going to put some stuff in his hair and make it super cool for the party. He was all in . . . . So after the ten minute treatment, and only finding two live lice and very few nits, we were off to the party, just in the nick of time. Not the mad rush I was hoping for that morning!

After the party that evening, I rechecked Casen's hair and found a few more nits which I removed. Of course, being the OCD person I am, I was a mad woman - vacuuming, bagging up his stuffed animals, washing bed sheets and clothes. I swear this is one of the worst things that could happen to an OCD person. I can now empathize with all the moms I have called to tell them their children have lice - it is a nightmare!!!

On Sunday, I again checked the boys heads and low and behold I spotted a live lice in Camden's hair. What??? I looked that dang head over twice on Saturday and his hair is so dang short - heck he had just gotten a hair cut earlier in the week. So, he got to head to the bathtub for the lovely treatment. I then was a cleaning mad woman in his room, washing sheets and putting his stuffed animals in the drier instead of bagging them because he would have not been able to sleep without all thirty of them surrounding him. : ) And now I am panicking about my own head . . .  I know how loving my boys are and we are always laying on the couch together, so I call up my friend, Tiffin, who is a school nurse as well and ask her if she can check my head. Of course, we both laugh about it, thinking I am in the clear, but I had a hair appointment scheduled for the next day and the last thing I wanted to do was show up at the hair salon with lice. So on Tuesday after work I head over to her house for my head check and low and behold, she finds nits - nothing live, just nits (7 to be exact). Are you freaking kidding me?????? So, I leave her house and head straight to the store and bought Cetaphil because I read on the internet that it was a great treatment that was not hard on your hair. According to the Cetaphil website, they have found that it will suffocate lice. So they recommend you wash your hair, drowned your hair with the Cetaphil and then comb through the hair using the lice comb. So I followed the instructions to a tee, however when I got to the combing out part, I spent nearly 30 minutes combing my hair and only had maybe 10% (if even that combed out). My hair was such a knotted mess there was no way I could sit there and continue to torcher myself. So I asked Shane to go to H-E-B, go in the entrance on the left, head to the fourth isle on the left, go down the isle half way down on the right near the top and grab me some Nix (how was that for precise instructions). I went back in the shower and worked to get the Cetaphil out and then when Shane returned home I treated myself and did the whole combing through every ounce of my hair, which is much more taxing with long hair compared to the boys short hair. Die all you creepy louse, DIE!!!!!  Of course, even though it is late at this point, I am again being a mad woman, washing our sheets and anything else I can get my hands on. Of course I cancelled my hair appointment because the Nix smell would have been a dead give away for anyone! The next night I asked Shane to nit pick my hair, but that was a complete lost cause because he said he didn't know what he was looking for and he was being too gentle - I needed him to dig that comb as close to my scalp as possible and I think he was scared to hurt me. So I did it myself the best I could.

So fast forward to a week later when it is time to do the second treatment for everyone. Now mind you, I have literally nit picked my children's heads every night to make sure they are in the clear. I am glad to say, my kids never once realized they had lice. They honestly just thought I was checking their scalp, or in Casen's case, making his hair look nice. I didn't want them to go crazy like I did!  The boys were awesome - nothing else was ever spotted, thank the Lord. However, I could not say the same for myself. I went back to Tiffin, who found about 5 more nits, but nothing live. Now if you read on the internet, it says do not treat just nits, only if you find something live, but I could not hear of that - so I treated yet again, but this time with something different, Rid-X.

I went back yet another week later to have Tiffin check for a third time and this time she only found a few nits. This time I used Rid-X yet again. Now as a side note, I do realize that I did not need to treat, however crazy OCD lady here could not let it go. I swear this is a nightmare and it is driving me crazy!!!! I go back yet a week later for a fourth visit with Tiffin, the day we leave for vacation, because I can't bare to think that I have these crazy things, and she finds 3 nits - nothing live. Again, I use Rid-X. I do realize that the nits she are finding are ones she could have overlooked while checking before, but these things have made me so dang crazy and I feel like my head is itching all the time! (Just typing this is making my head itch).

So we return from vacation, and I honestly think I am in the clear - I have not felt a thing, no itching, no nothing. But, I need to make a hair appointment because my hair is a fried mess after all of this (mind you I was supposed to go to the salon a month ago but cancelled due to these horrible pests). I again head over to Tiffin's house today and she finds one lousy nit. I have decided I am not treating and am calling it all a wash!!!! I am OVER IT!!!! I have been dealing with this for a month - A MONTH!!! Now the little guy who brought this into our home (I am certain it was Casen) was in the clear after a week, however this poor momma, who treated and took care of everyone else, was left dealing with the aftermath for a month! CRAZY!!!!

I say all of this to say - as a school nurse, I have seen more than my share of lice. I only thought I could relate with these poor mommas who I have talked to numerous times on the phone who were dealing with lice. I can honestly say, they are the most annoying parasite and I do not wish this on anyone. Looking back, I do believe I over reacted by treating myself 4 times (two is generally the norm) - but I am going to blame that on my OCD. ; )

Summer Vacation 2016

Now that the boys are getting older, family vacations are easier to plan and are more enjoyable. Since we had not been to Alabama or Georgia in several years, we knew we needed to go visit family and thought a trip to the beach would be a great get away for the family. We left on June 7th and headed to Birmingham, Alabama where we stayed with Ronald and Manya's for three days. While we were there we had a great time eating, visiting, and eating some more.

The first full day, we went to the Birmingham zoo.

Camden loves Macaws just like
I did when I was his age

The boys requested to have a picture with the goat
We had fun in the Larakeet exhibit.

Once we got home the boys put on their bathing suits and had water gun fights with Manya.

The next day we visited Pop Pop and Nadine. While we were there, Casen stood up in front of everyone and sang multiple songs, as well as danced for them. I tell you, that boy is not shy one bit!!

Manya got up and danced with Casen

That evening we visited with Shane's cousin Ronya and her family, and, did I mention, we ate. : )  We had a great time with Ronald and Manya - they are always so kind to open up their home to us and spoil us all rotten while we are there!

Austin had a tortilla face too!

After being there several days, we headed to Macon, Georgia on Friday and arrived at Granny and Granddad's house. While there we stayed busy. The boys played outside a lot and swam in the neighborhood pool. One day we went to the aviation museum in Warner Robbins and the boys, especially Camden, really enjoyed it. He took the time to listen and learn about different things and found that the Flying Tigers were his favorite.

We were able to visit with a lot of Shane's extended family while there and see lots of cousins. Camden wanted to have a picnic outside while there, and of course Granny obliged.

I always love visiting their home because it so much reminds me of when I was a kid and would go and visit my grandparents in Missouri. I always feel so comfortable and relaxed there.

On Monday we headed to Panama City Beach, Florida for the last leg of our vacation. We rented a condo on the beach which was just perfect.

Ready to get to the beach
Our view for several days

The boys had a great time playing in the sand,
jumping waves, trying to catch fish (and actually
catching one), eating out and going to a go-kart
place to ride go-karts and other rides.

One of my favorite pictures from our vacation
We ate good food while we were there. We ate breakfast and lunch in the condo so we could spend as much time on the beach as possible and then cleaned up and headed out for the evenings. The boys LOVE to eat at restaurants, so that was an added bonus for them.

Hook'd (they had wonderful fish tacos)
We had fun riding different rides at the go-kart place. Unfortunately Casen was not tall enough to ride some of the rides he wanted to ride, but had fun on the Scrambler and Spider. Camden rode the roller coaster and the Rock N' Roll ride with me, however after riding them he said they scared him a little.

Shane and Casen on the Scrambler

Camden and I ready to ride the roller coaster
All the fun wore my poor boys out. I don't know of very many days that I actually am awake before Casen, since he is my earlier riser, but this particular morning I beat them both. On a side note, we actually had bunk beds in the condo where the boys slept the first night, however Casen woke up crying multiple times, so we asked them if they wanted to sleep on the couch bed, which they did, and Casen slept much better!
The beach wore the boys out - Casen NEVER sleeps
late - but I caught him still asleep.
The boys had a fun time trying to catch fish with a net - they actually caught a little minnow after Shane worked to trap it in a small space where they could catch it.

I took some pictures of the boys on the beach our last evening and these were a few of my favorite.

wear his headphones.)

We arrived home this evening after stopping in Lumberton to pick up Zach from Shane's parents. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed the vacation and if you ask the boys what their favorite part was, they will tell you all of it. I would say we had a successful vacation.
